My Canadian Hair, Teeth and Armpits

These days, any time I’m in a store, I ask what products they have that are made in Canada. Not, you know, while I’m grocery shopping, but any store with a relatively limited inventory.

I stopped into a men’s store in Vancouver’s fashionable Gastown district. I’ve bought a lot of clothes from them over the past few years–they stock a combination of stuffy, preppy Britishness and gentle funk that is my sartorial sweet spot.

Did they have any Canadian-made clothes? Nope. I pressed my luck, and asked about any clothes simply designed by Canadians. The clerk glared at me through her Macross-era Japanimation haircut and said “well, we’ve got these wallets”. They were very fetching, but I could hardly wear one to a client meeting.

I have, however, had more success scouring the aisles of drug stores across the country. While in Toronto on business, I bought some Cromwell & Cruthers shaving oil. I liked its old-timey brand and downright medicinal bottle.

I did not like its ineffectiveness as a facial lubricant. I rejected it for my shaving soap (I forget where I got it, maybe here?).

For the last couple of months, I’ve been looking for a replacement for some Canadian-made hair gel which makes me smell like a 13-year-old version of myself. The gel also produced a kind of Jersey Shore crunchiness to my hair.

I was excited, then, to discover both a pomade (yes, I said “pomade”) and a putty made by La Coupe in Quebec. What’s the difference between a pomade, a gel and a putty? I’d need an advanced degree in salon thermodynamics to answer that question. I can tell that the putty brings just the right intensity of hold to my hair.

My hair is no more than three-quarters of an inch at any point on my head, so the whole question of “hold” is pretty moot. However, I’m happy to find a product that works well.

I’ve also been relying on a raft of products from Green Beaver. They’ve been an oddly-named godsend, and I’m currently using their lavendar shampoo (my hair sure smells purty), toothpaste (a woeful substitute for Colgate, Crest or any reputable brand), deodorant (over-promises and under-delivers) and facial cleanser (worryingly gelatinous, but it gets the job done).

I have yet to find a Canadian household product that’s markedly superior to its foreign-made, global-corporation-backed competitors. A variety of the products I’m using have green or eco-friendly characteristics, and this always coincides with “not as effective as the nastier stuff”. I’m happy to apply a little more elbow grease to compensate, but I’d hope to have my mind blown by some Canadian-made stuff a little more often.

I use Green Beaver (or similar) deodorant because of its low toxicity, but I found it didn’t quite do the job as well as the stuff with more questionable ingredients… until I found a way to ‘hack’ it. I dip the stick into a box of baking soda before applying it. Just a little of the baking soda sticks to the stick & then gets rubbed into my skin easily with the deodorant. This combo works BETTER than the ‘normal’ stuff. Not sure if you could find Canadian-sourced baking soda, however…

AG hair products are not only Canadian, they’re made in Vancouver.
    https://www.aghair.com/
(Not sure where ingredients are sourced from, but according to website, manufactured here.)
Niko Cosmetics is also Canadian and they make amazing stuff, super high quality. Not sure where ingredients are sourced from, doubtful they are all Canadian. https://www.nikocosmetics.com/
I agree on the Green Beaver deodorant. Nice that it’s made in Canada. Not so nice that it doesn’t work.

Have you looked at AG. It’s a Canadian company and I believe everything is made in Canada. They’ll have a number of shampoo/conditioner and styling product options.

Great site! Since discovering this site, I have been checking all my labels to see where things are made. This morning when I was putting on my deodorant, I noticed it is “Made in Canada” I know this doesn’t necessarily mean it is 100% made here but I thought I’d mention the brand, Adidas Women’s Deodorant with Cotton Tech – Fitness Fresh. I buy this deodorant as it has 0% aluminum and it actually works!

I know this post is from a while ago, but have you checked out a company called Skinlicious? https://www.skinlicious.com
While their ingredients are not necessarily sourced in Canada, all of their products are handmade in Ontario. Their soaps and body butters are super effective and they don’t cause a reaction in my super-sensitive skin. My partner really likes their sandalwood soap.

I too have tried the Green Beaver deodorant and found it just didn’t work for me. I have been working at lessening the amount of chemicals in my life and then when I found out what you were doing I started to work on trying to find Canadian products that were chemical free or reduced. I have found a deodorant that works amazingly well from Rocky Mountain Soap Company https://www.rockymountainsoap.com/ , they are out of Canmore, Alberta. I use the unscented but there is also a men’s one. Everyone’s body chemicals are different so it’s a trial and error type of thing but this gives you another one to try. I have been really impressed with it.
