I love most of the Canadian films I see (usually at film festivals since they don't get distribution). Whether they're from 'French' or 'English' Canada, they're generally indie and real, somewhat like European films, I'm not talking about committee-designed comedies created for film tax shelters. As you mention there are dogs everywhere. The Canadian versions of those dogs don't have the market and money to compete with marketing, stars and production values. No, I'm talking about the kind of Canadian films that show our strengths. We tend to have real characters, not Hollywood fakes and often have quirky and original concepts instead of cliched 'blockbusters'. Not to mention world-class animation and documentaries. Some of the most touching films I've seen were Canadian. From 'Mon Oncle Antoine' to 'Away from Her', from 'Red Violin' to 'The Corporation', from 'Who Has Seen the Wind' to 'My Life Without Me' - ok, I'm leaving out so many, many other worthy Canadian films. But I hope this gives you some hint that we have artists to be proud of and they're producing fine Canadian cinema. That's the same for every film industry. Have you seen the movie "One Week", it's Canadian produced, Canadian actors, filmmakers, etc. Some Canadian movies are bad, some are good. In fact, having taken the time to watch the noted Canadian movies (Genie award nominees for example), I find them superior to the junk coming from Jan and Kees. Amal and Ce qu'il faut pour vivre are two excellent examples. I also just watched an excellent animated short film shown on the National Film Board website. Canadian movies are generally quite good. Although the 10th month has expired, check out C.R.A.Z.Y., La Grande Séduction, Les Invasions Barbares and Route 132. I suspect the reason there aren't more is a matter of funding and the limited audience of Canadian films compared to the US market. It wasn't so long ago Canadian fiction didn't register on the literary scene and look at us now. I wish our film industry could see similar success. They focus on alot of Canadian programming. You can even check back to previous years and see what films they had. Did you even check out the Vancouver International Film Festival? I don't know if it's because they're basically uncensored, and have no taboo subjects. It almost reminds me of movies/tv shows from England. I don't know if you WANT to consider Quebec a part of Canada, but I for one think they've come out with great movies and I'm proud to say are Canadian!
