Why are you doing this (you nutter)?

My reasons are three-fold.

  1. It’s a way to trick myself into being more thoughtful about what I consume. Have you ever tried manually tracking every single expense you incur for a month or two? You become hyper-aware of your spending. This project works the same way. And maybe I can inspire a few others to think about how they consume.
  2. I’m curious, and I like research. I hope that this living Canadian vein is a deep vein to tap.
  3. I’m a bit of a patriot.

Can we talk about the rules?

You bet we can. As soon as I tell people about One Year, One Canadian, they want to discuss the why’s, where’s and wherefores of each topic. Each month will begin with a plan for the rules for that given month.

Isn’t this just the 100-Mile Diet?

I hope not. It’s more like the 5780-mile diet, except for everything, not just food. Food is just going to be one-twelfth of the project, and I’m kind of the opposite of a food snob. If I could eat a daily pill that would provide all the calories and vitamins I needed to survive, I’d do it in an instant. So, I’m not going to be delighted by visiting local farmer’s markets.

I’ve got a great recipe for homemade shampoo. Do you want it?

That’s very kind, but I’ll pass. I don’t want this project be about canning squash and making cleaner out of vinegar and baking soda (that, by the way, is a bad idea). One Year, One Canadian is, at its heart, about thoughtful consumption. I’m interested in where the things that other people make come from.
